This small boutique hotel, built in the 1920s by French Millionaire Antoine Mercier, was to be his gift to the city of Toronto, but the name − meaning ‘to you’ − was an inside joke between he and his wife Isabel, as it was really his gift to her.
Mercier died during the hotel’s construction, and although it was generally considered to be of a heart attack, darker rumours circulated and the death was investigated by the Gendarmerie. Nothing came of the investigation and the case was closed. While Isabel slowly works to complete the hotel, her heart isn’t in it. Her focus, frozen in time, is in the lobby bar that bears the hotels name.
This is à toi.
